ABOUT ELAN KANE

I was most recently the Marketing Manager at NewsGuard Technologies, where I focused on developing B2B and B2C marketing campaigns to amplify the company's international profile and increase commercial sales. Specifically, I led the company's social, email and website marketing efforts, collaborating with C-suite executives to develop strategic and targeted marketing campaigns through our CRM, HubSpot. I also drafted and edited press releases and company brochures (such as our 2023 Social Impact Report) and organized virtual and in-person community events, all while managing a budget.

 

In directing NewsGuard’s marketing efforts, I deployed marketing best practices and experimented with new strategies to engage leads and consumers. I would always put myself in the position of someone reading the materials I created. I would ask myself: What part of the customer journey is the reader on? How can I engage them effectively? How can I lead them down the funnel to support the needs of the business? I also constantly assessed key performance metrics such as clicks, impressions and engagement rates, and I reported on successful metrics and areas that needed improvement to senior stakeholders.

 

Prior to this role, I worked as the operations coordinator for the Google News Initiative's Startups Program. I worked on the day-to-day operations processes of the program, including communications and marketing (such as weekly social media posts and a monthly internal newsletter), budgeting, project management, strategy development and impact tracking.

 

Before that role, I worked for four years as the Senior Manager of Communications at The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS). While there, I leveraged my master’s degree in journalism to devise strategies for how to best promote JTS’s programs to tell its story. I managed numerous projects simultaneously on deadline, including overseeing the school’s paid social media strategy for the admissions team.

 

I received my Master of Science degree in Journalism at Northwestern University at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications in August 2017. I graduated from Brandeis University in spring 2016, majoring in American Studies and minoring in Journalism and Near Eastern and Judaic Studies.

While pursuing my master's degree, I interned in the sports department at the Chicago Sun-Times where I produced content on Chicago-area sports stories. (You can view many of my 60+ articles here.) I also wrote Chicago sports features for Medill Reports, a website associated with the Medill graduate journalism program. 

 

I have a passion for marketing and storytelling, with six-plus years of professional experience. I currently live in Brooklyn and I am an avid ultimate Frisbee player.
